In April 1992, the verdict came down, Los Angeles caught fire, and the police fell back. The world remembers what happened next as an image: Korean-American shopkeepers on the rooftops of Koreatown, armed, holding the line for their families when no one else would. Tony Moon lived the story behind that image. He was nineteen — an immigrant grocer’s son, a car salesman from Alhambra — when the phone rang on the second night and a friend said the words that put him in the middle of the fight for Koreatown: “You know why I called, right?”

Rooftop Korean is his memoir of that week and everything that led to it — the family that crossed the world to build corner markets open 363 days a year, the streets that nearly swallowed him first, the five days in April when ordinary people became their own defense, and the thirty years he has spent making sense of it. The book releases September 15. That night, he’s here.

Join us at the Institute for an evening with Tony Moon: a seated reading, an on-stage conversation and audience Q&A — the riots, the immigrant road that led to that week, and what it taught him about responsibility — and a signing line to close the night.

Q&A moderated by Steven Lieberman — attorney, CCW instructor, and host of The Counselor at Arms.
